John’s Story was my first book design from cover to layout. It was a lot of fun patching up his collection of historical black and white photos, and designing the concept for the cover – German WWII bombers flying over the Wellington Rocks in Royal Tunbridge Wells, where as a boy John would watch the planes pass over on nightly raids to bomb London.
On one occasion we were having so much fun on the common that we were late heading home and heard the sirens going off. Instead of running home as fast as we could, we stayed on the rocks to watch the German bombers fly over, and saw the huge glow in the sky which was London burning after the bombs had been dropped.
